The History and Future of the CAD Industry

When it comes to creating a complex 3D project, the planning is one of, if not the most, important part of the process. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, a large project meant hopping on a drafting machine and using precision instruments to create the perfect blueprints. However, in the 1980’s this changed with the release of the Dimension III Systems which introduced CAD software to the world. Over time, technological evolution pushed CAD to evolve from being on a dedicated machine to becoming a downloadable software almost anyone can use. Nowadays, CAD software SOLIDWORKS boasts over 8 million members in its community with a number of prominent entrepreneurs and figures.

Now, CAD is seeing the next evolution on the horizon thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). SOLIDWORKS has already released Aura AI, which has the capability to learn from user behavior and tailor its responses depending on the user. However, it can also turn an image to a sketch and create 2D drawings from a 3D model. This predictive AI varies how it functions based on your workflow as well. Ultimately, if you’ve never learned CAD or been hesitant to start, the introduction of Aura AI makes this software easier to pick up than ever.
